The ageing of the baby boomer generation means the number of opportunities in fitness, health and beauty has been steadily increasing in recent years. It’s one of the major growth areas in franchising internationally.

On the fitness side, there are a number of gym and personal training brands available, as well as studios offering Pilates, pole and other exercise regimes. The beauty industry offers everything from hair salons and nail salons to microblading and appearance medicine. There are also transport franchises which offer a personal service catering for older or less able clients.

When beauty franchises scooped the top two titles at the 2022 Westpac New Zealand Franchise Awards, it demonstrated the real value of the franchise model in this sector. Franchising enabled them to combine their personal effort with a thoroughly well-developed and effective brand and business system to create highly successful businesses.

This is an area where appearance counts. If you have difficulty with your personal image, even superb people and management skills may not be enough to help you succeed in a slimming or fitness centre franchise. Equally, if you are in the beauty business, you’ll need to put your make-up on every time you go out. But if you aren’t the type of person who is passionate about this sort of lifestyle anyway, you probably shouldn’t be considering a business in the sector – no matter how big the expected growth over the next 20 years.

When you’re looking for a business, it’s important to do more than ask ‘How much does it cost?’ and ‘What experience do I need?' Do your research – we recommend putting in at least an hour of research for every $1000 that you plan to invest. Apart from talking to the franchisor and asking them lots of questions, it’s also a good idea to talk to franchisees who are already running similar businesses to get all the information you need before you open your own. 

While there are many good fitness, health & beauty franchise opportunities for sale, they are all different. Before making your decision, you should consult a lawyer specialising in franchises. You’ll also want to know how much you can make from a business so consult a financial advisor or accountant experienced in franchising.
