Who are we?

Goodwin Turner has a different approach to other law firms. We offer more than just legal expertise. We judge our success by the relationships we build with our clients, and we look for opportunities to add value.

We also understand that clients want to know that their lawyer is delivering the right results to them, and what those services will cost.

We specialise in franchising and as such, are recognised experts in franchising law. Our legal analysis is of the same quality as a large commercial law firm, while our level of personal attention, relationship-building and our pro-active approach is on par with boutique practices.

Goodwin Turner has won Global Law Experts Franchising awards every year from 2014-2021.

Scott Goodwin has also been awarded a place in Who’s Who Legal every year from 2017-2021 in recognition of his outstanding work in franchising.

Who leads our team?

Scott Goodwin

Scott is a commercial lawyer with a passion for franchising and intellectual property. He advises a wide range of businesses on all aspects of franchising, with a particular focus on creating “bankable” franchise arrangements.

Scott is part of a network made up of key industry service providers, bankers and the Franchise Association of New Zealand. He is therefore able to add value far beyond the provision of legal services.

He can protect all aspects of a clients’ intellectual property relevant to the franchise system and provide strategies to protect trademarks, logos and brands to clients in New Zealand and Australia.

He has experience in completing due diligence on the acquisition of a “going concern” master franchise, negotiating master franchise agreements and other documents relating to international franchise opportunities, and advising on the acquisition of master franchise opportunities to export a New Zealand-based system overseas.

Paul Turner

Paul’s practice includes advising on business and share sales and purchases, commercial leasing, corporate structuring, commercial property transactions, and negotiating and preparing a wide range of commercial agreements.

Paul has worked in New Zealand and overseas, including in-house legal counsel roles in the United Kingdom for Barclays Bank and the New York Stock Exchange Euronext stock exchange group. This breadth of experience means he is able to give practical and commercially focused legal advice across a range of areas.

Paul has experience in multi-million dollar bank refinancing transactions involving multiple entities and properties. He has also advised leading financial institutions on drafting their standard contract for purchasing emissions units, and hospitality groups on their liquor licensing and leasing affairs.
