Auckland Council grants consent for a stand-alone new drive-thru McDonald's restaurant on a corner site off Broadway

The Auckland suburb of Newmarket’s first McDonald’s opened at 238 Broadway in 1989, and the franchisees Jane & David Weikart had three stores operating in the Newmarket area before its large scale redevelopment in the last decade.

McDonald's said last year that there were, "no foreseeable opportunities for the purchase of new or existing restaurants in the four main centres of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin". Recently, however, McDonald’s head of impact and communications, Simon Kenny, shared with the The New Zealand Herald that they had been looking for a suitable site for a new restaurant in Newmarket for a number of years. 

The new site is on land running beneath the southern motorway and is owned by the Dilworth Trust Board and leased to McDonald’s. Auckland Council granted non-notified approval on June 19 for the development of the site. Earlier this week Simon Kenny told the Herald, "We are working through the process to finalise plans. We’re hopeful that we could open a new restaurant in Newmarket in the next 12 months."
