The new cups contain no oil and use no toxic inks.

As waste reduction and recycling become increasingly high profile issues, franchises have been looking for alternative solutions for the takeaway market. Now Café Coffee & Bakery Systems (NZ) Ltd, which holds the national master franchise for several of New Zealand’s best-known coffee brands, has announced several initiatives.

‘We are proud to partner with Ecoware NZ for our move to commercially-compostable takeaway cups, lids, and straws,’ says CCBS managing director Andrew Morgan. ‘These contain no oil and use non-toxic inks. Plastic PET frappé cups are next to get phased out within our brand portfolio. This is part of our pledge to be involved in helping reduce waste through our brands – Esquires Café, The Coffee Guy, Cafe2u, Brumby’s Bakery, and Gloria Jean’s Coffees.’

‘We’re not stopping there! As part of reducing and managing waste while our customers enjoy their daily coffee ritual, we’ve introduced glass reusable KeepCups across all our brands. We are supporting the “Use-Your-Own” or UYO (pronounced as you-yo) movement, a not-for profit organisation based in Dunedin. Every little step counts for a sustainable future.'

‘As technology changes, we will continue to review our environmental social responsibility to ensure any opportunities to further improve sustainability and reduce waste in our group.' ‘As Margaret Meade wrote, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”’
