Big profit potential in a massive, growing, stable market

The New Zealand renovation market is around $8.3b per annum, tracking to $11.5b by 2021. Refresh’s franchise model has been developed to allow business oriented people to grow large and profitable businesses in this market. The revenue expectation for each Refresh franchisee is $2-to-4 million within 3-5 years.

Perfectly suited to people with business management skills and experience

Successful Refresh franchisees generally have backgrounds in senior management positions, or have owned their own businesses before. You definitely do not need to be a builder or have any experience in the building industry to join Refresh. What you need is a positive attitude, a growth mind-set and a focus on delivering great customer experiences.

We provide comprehensive training in all aspects of the business, and we support franchisees with world-leading business management systems and processes.

Refresh franchisees generally start out working on the sales side of the business, supported by an employed or sub-contracted builders to take care of the project side of the business.

As franchises grow, franchise owners move into more of a management role and bring on additional sales and project staff. The franchise model is designed to allow franchisees to start slowly and build up significant businesses over time, taking on a large number of concurrent projects. Projects range in size from around $20,000 to upwards of $1,000,000. You will develop an exciting portfolio of projects and clients.

Ready for a fresh approach: a huge, poorly-served consumer market

The renovation market is huge. It’s bigger than the fixed line and mobile telecommunications market. It’s four times bigger than the quick service fast food market. Yet until Refresh, there were no large, well-known brands.

You’d expect a market of this size to have several very large operators, but it doesn’t. Before Refresh the renovation market was dominated by trade-based “one-man-band” builders. A survey by the Department of Housing revealed that 30% of customers had dispute over their renovations, and 19% (nearly one in five!) of these were major disputes. That’s a lot of unhappy customers, and that’s where the opportunity lay.

So how did that market failure develop? Until Refresh, large building companies focused on new homes (eg. G.J. Gardner, Golden Homes, Signature Homes, etc) and commercial projects (eg. Fletcher Construction, Hawkins, Arrow, etc). Residential builders and tradespeople tended to use renovations as fill-in work between building new homes, which they found easier in terms of customer expectation management. Builders are practical, and tend to focus on the building work itself, rather than the business and customer management side. This left the renovation market wide open for a customer-centric business like Refresh.

Renovating requires a different approach. It’s revolves around ensuring clear, consistent communications with customers, who are heavily involved throughout. This requires different processes, systems and skill sets to that traditionally found in building companies. Refresh was designed around the fantastic opportunity to deliver better value to customers through a more sophisticated and more customer-centric approach.

The Renovate Handbook is New Zealand’s only renovation-focused publication. Published annually with a 40,000 print run, it is distributed in bookstores and supermarkets nationwide, and has over 2,000 regular subscribers. The Renovate Handbook is a very impressive brand building vehicle for Refresh.
