Pack & Send franchisees build million-dollar business from scratch

Franchise of the Year 2022-2023 - Jane and Jeremy Bain: 'Constantly ahead of the game'

In 2013, Jeremy and Jane Bain made a big decision. Just four years after New Zealand’s Pack & Send franchise came to New Zealand, the couple opened a brand-new centre in Takapuna. Neither had ever worked in the freight sector before but, 10 years later, they have a million dollar business and have been named Pack & Send Franchise of the Year for 2022-23. Now their goal is to become the top performers for the whole of Australasia.

‘That might sound unrealistic in our smaller market, but the beauty of Pack & Send is that we offer a service which is much in demand, offering a wide range of courier, freight and packaging under one roof.’ explains Jane. ‘We are a one-stop-shop for sending virtually anything anywhere, and with the growth in online retailing we are very popular with local businesses.

Pack & Send is a well-known brand with a global reach. Last year, it became part of MBE Worldwide, which gives franchisees like us the opportunity to expand our capabilities through developing family ties with the other packaging, logistics businesses that come under the MBE umbrella. The result is more business than ever.’

A future with a franchise

Jeremy and Jane’s journey began when Jeremy picked up a copy of Franchise New Zealand magazine and read about Pack & Send. ‘After years of working in supply chain management for a bedding manufacturer, I felt I’d hit the promotion ceiling and should look at doing something for myself,’ says Jeremy. ‘We had just relocated to a new home that didn’t have space for Jane to continue her photo block business, so the time was right.

‘We saw our future with a good franchise where the product or system is proven and processes are in place to succeed, and what I read about Pack & Send really appealed. We could see potential on a number of levels.

‘Franchisees can go out to local businesses and collect items, or customers can drop off what they want to be professionally packed regardless of size or shape. They have the knowledge of how to get items to destinations and the impartiality to recommend the best solutions. Then there’s the big customer benefit of having a professional look after all the documentation required to send items overseas, not to mention the no-nonsense loss or damage warranty. It’s a very well-developed and attractive business model.

‘Once we made contact, the whole process from enquiry, due diligence, approval, comprehensive training in Christchurch and our service centre fit-out took only about three months.

‘They knew what they were doing, and we still can’t speak highly enough of the ‘no limits’ culture and the franchisor team that ensures Pack & Send never stands still. Franchisees are constantly kept ahead of the game, whether it’s online systems such as remote training, or meeting changes in people’s buying habits.’

Word-of-mouth plus online excellence

Jane says that recommendations from satisfied customers are big drivers of success, especially amongst online retailers who appreciate the cost and time savings of not having to package their goods and sort out the delivery logistics themselves.

‘With loyalty strong among customers, as they grow, we grow! We get a lot of business from the art field, too. Galleries and dealers have made Pack & Send the go-to for their specialised packaging and delivery solutions. ‘And there are also strong enquiries that come through Pack & Send’s excellent online marketing portals.

‘That Jeremy and I, along with our daughter Madi and four staff, are generating over $1 million in sales and still growing has to be the best recommendation we can give for Pack & Send as a franchise.’

Nathan Paul, the company’s National Group Manager, says that Pack & Send franchises are available throughout New Zealand for an investment of around $190,000 +gst (including working capital). ‘For a future that’s packed with opportunity, contact us and find out more,’ he invites. ‘As Jane and Jeremy have demonstrated, if you have an absolute commitment to customer service and determination to succeed, it’s a great business.’
