Compass Homes offers new franchisees real benefits
Curiosity may have killed the cat, but for building industry veteran Terry Sharplin it led to a new life as a Compass Homes franchisee. Having returned to Tauranga’s Papamoa Beach after 26 years in Australia, Terry and partner Wendy were walking in Sandhurst Drive in 2018 when a new home build caught their attention.
‘I was intrigued by the design,’ recalls Terry, who has been in the building industry from a 16-year-old management trainee to the top rung of the corporate ladder. ‘So when the house opened as a Compass Homes show home, I was probably one of the first through the door and was welcomed by Compass Homes co-founder Garry Shuttleworth. We asked questions of each other and although I said that I was considering semi-retirement, we agreed to get together for a serious chat.
‘By the time that happened, I’d delved deep into Compass Homes and was much more open to buying a franchise. There was a lot to like. Due diligence showed that Compass Homes successfully competes with the big boys on buying power and has strong national alliances. I contacted some of the existing franchisees and was impressed with the guidance and help they give each other, and also their very positive comments about Compass Homes and its ideals.’
What you see is what you get
‘Compass Homes is different,’ Terry explains. ‘The systems and processes provided to a new franchisee are second-to-none, which makes starting out a lot less daunting.
‘In addition, the company’s commitment to value-engineering and openness to achieving cost savings without compromising quality impressed me. As a result, Compass Homes can build to pretty much any budget from first home to high-end. The Compass Homes mandate that show homes must be “what you see is what you get” also got a big tick from me, as did the very reasonable $50,000 franchise fee.
‘Part of the package includes Rave, a leading-edge online project management program that not only helps franchisees manage timelines but also allows their customers to follow building progress. This provides timetable information and photos that are automatically emailed to customers as building continues as well as immediate notification of any queries or issues. It keeps people engaged and saves problems or misunderstandings, which is very valuable.’
The right people in the right place
So Terry went to his meeting with Garry already keen on the opportunity, and when he was offered the Western Bay of Plenty territory, which included his Papamoa home, he was ready to sign. But there was one more hurdle – meeting the newly-appointed CEO of Compass Homes, Bronwyn Bindon.
‘Garry said that if we both felt we could get on well it would be all go. Well, we did, and having now been a Compass Homes franchisee for almost two years I can say with hand on heart that I’ve never worked with a more switched-on CEO. When it comes to sales, marketing, processes and systems, I would put Bronwyn above all others. To top it off, the franchise office is staffed with exceptionally talented people such as operations manager, Aaron Greenwood. If ever I need pointers and directions on anything, I can one hundred percent rely on head office advice and assistance. It’s because of this easy access to the right people that that Compass Homes franchisees feel so supported.’
That focus on getting the right people in the right place is vital for franchisees, too. ‘For me, it was appointing a good building supervisor; for others, it may be an experienced sales person,’ Terry says. ‘That’s why a Compass Homes franchise is such a rewarding opportunity for experienced business people – regardless of their industry or professional backgrounds. Far from semi-retiring I now have three houses being built, two in council, two about to go to council and am drawing deposits on a further ten.
‘Compass Homes has more opportunities available around the country, so contact Bronwyn yourself and start building an amazing future with some amazing people.’
