UBX is a fast-growing boxing and strength fitness franchise launching in New Zealand
Boxing is used by countless elite athletes for conditioning, so it’s no surprise that a franchise designed to maximise results through combining boxing with a functional and highly-varied strength programme has taken off fast.
‘From opening our first franchise in March 2016, UBX now has 80 clubs in Australia, Singapore and the UK opening in 2020,’ says Tim West. ‘With our pilot club thriving in Mt Maunganui, we’re now ready to expand throughout New Zealand.’
Tim founded UBX (pronounced ‘You-Box’) with four-time world champion boxer, Danny Green. ‘UBX allows the everyday person to train like a pro without ever getting hit,’ says Tim. ‘We deliver a functional and highly varied strength programme, progressing through sports-specific training cycles that are guaranteed to get you in fighting shape.
‘Our workouts replicate the physical demands of a 12-round championship bout; there are 12 x 3-minute rounds with 30 seconds rest between. Each workout is completed in under 45 minutes which is the optimal duration for high-intensity training, maintaining the right balance between effort and results.’

‘The business model of the franchise focuses on delivering our product to exceed our customers’ expectations. It relies upon results and relationships, and the people we are looking for as franchisees need to share our culture. We have both trainers and members who have bought into the business and opened their own clubs after experiencing UBX – they’ve fallen in love with the concept and understand what it is we want to achieve in terms of values and beliefs.’
UBX plans to allocate approximately 60 territories around New Zealand. ‘Our model doesn’t require bulky, expensive equipment like a traditional gym and can be run by one or two staff,’ says Tim. ‘With an efficient space that minimises overheads, franchisees have the opportunity to generate a substantial income from a relatively low capital base. Investment levels start from around $200,000, depending on location. We are open to entrepreneurs from all business backgrounds – you don’t need fitness industry experience, but we bet that you’ll become hooked, too.’
The franchise offers full business management training; comprehensive coaching on the UBX business system; proven operational systems; and extensive support infrastructure. The exercise programmes are updated daily to keep members engaged; there are regular, targeted engagement activities designed to grow and retain your member base; and national and local marketing resources.
‘A UBX franchise is the perfect choice for someone looking for a low cost, high value opportunity in the fitness industry,’ says Tim. ‘We offer a great opportunity with a percentage royalty fee that grows in line with your income. You don’t need a huge building – only 130-160 square metres, and you can expect a strong return on your investment. Give us a call and let’s talk about your aspirations and our proven model.’
