It’s all taken off for former Jim’s Test & Tag rookie

The great thing about this business is that it grows exponentially, says Kevin du Preez. ‘When I started my Jim’s Test & Tag franchise I was barely meeting my goals at first, but in my second year as all the regular inspections rolled over, my whole business snowballed. I met my annual targets by the sixth month, and the curve is continuing upwards.’

Jim’s Test & Tag provides testing and tagging services for electrical equipment, fire extinguishers and first aid equipment in workplaces throughout the country. ‘Much of this equipment, particularly on building sites, needs to be checked every three months,’ Kevin points out. ‘On-site equipment usually needs six-monthly and a growing number of office machines need annual testing, all to the relevant standards: AS/NZS3760:2010, or NZS4503:2005 for fire extinguishers. It’s a legal requirement that generates a lot of work and a lot of repeat business.’

Formerly a senior manager in the construction industry, Kevin decided that buying a franchise offered a good way into owning his own business. Having experienced the franchise himself, he’s now become a regional franchisor, recruiting and training others to repeat his success. ‘I could see the business growing in my territory north of Auckland and I knew the potential so I decided to seize the moment. I’m looking for 20 franchisees to cover the region and I am quite confident I can support them to build the kind of business I have built.’

Simple to run

‘It’s a simple business to run, I can schedule my work round anything else I want to do, and you don’t need to be an electrician – the training teaches you all you need to know and the systems help you stay on top of all that repeat work. Jim’s operate a lead system through their call centre and you just follow up the leads, as well as looking out for local opportunities and referrals. You don’t need to be a salesman – I’m not, but I can talk to business owners and managers and explain our service and their legal responsibilities.

‘As your work builds up, you may find you have too much, in which case you can recoup some of your investment by selling work to other franchisees. It’s a great system, and Jim’s even have a work guarantee of $4,000 a month (depending on certain criteria) which provides peace of mind for anyone nervous about going into business for the first time.
