Kitchen experience leads couple to new Dream Doors business
Having your kitchen renovated should be a rewarding experience, but for Matt Santry and Trevyna Heke the reward was finding a new business opportunity. ‘Last year, we contacted a company to renovate our kitchen,’ says Trevyna. ‘The sales person was empathetic and understood what we wanted, but immediately we gave them the job, we never saw her again. Our next contact was with the installer – a total stranger to us. We had to arrange the plumber and electrician ourselves, as the kitchen company didn’t offer that part of the service, so there were lots of explanations, complications and stress.
‘From a great beginning, we felt let down and cast adrift. We both worked in the supply chain of the healthcare industry, so we are well-versed on what customer service should be.’
Matt and Trevyna had already talked about going into business together, and this experience made them think about a service which would project-manage kitchen, bathroom and laundry renovations from concept to completion. When they started researching the market, they discovered that Dream Doors was already there. They investigated further and liked what they saw.
‘Not only does Dream Doors hit the right notes for customer service; we could also see tremendous value in its cost-saving concept,’ says Matt. ‘Rather than throw out perfectly sound cabinetry, the company provides facelifts for a fraction of the price by replacing existing cupboard doors, drawer fronts, benches and other surfaces with brand new ones. Where required, it can provide new kitchens, too.
‘We got in touch with Derek Lilly, the franchisor, and he told us all about it. The franchise fee of $75,000 +gst is very reasonable for such a profitable business model, and Dream Doors’ systems and processes really impressed us, especially the cloud-based Franchise Management System.’ The award-winning system tracks leads and revenues; measures advertising effectiveness; collects and monitors customer feedback and identifies potential issues, as well as enabling the support team to keep a finger on the health of each franchisee’s business.
Matt and Trevyna became Dream Doors’ Auckland Central and East franchisees in February this year. ‘We went through training in Christchurch with Adrian Kay, a very experienced franchisee, and Derek was also very much involved in getting us set up in our territory. As a result, we got off to a great start and are already tracking above projections.
‘A Dream Doors business is about sales, customer service and project management, although it suits me to get stuck in on site sometimes,’ Matt smiles. ‘Meanwhile, Trevyna is right into marketing, finance and design. All in all, Dream Doors is a dream come true for us.’
