Just Kidz is franchising its unique pre-school education centres

Just Kidz is now ready to expand nationwide

With New Zealand’s population about to reach the five million mark, the demand for pre-school education is higher than ever. That means big opportunities for entrepreneurs, but it’s not something to go into lightly: looking after families and helping educate the next generation is a precious task, and it’s also a highly-regulated industry.

At Just Kidz, they know this only too well. Gavin and Deborah Muldoon opened the first Just Kidz in Dannemora 17 years ago, and there are now seven Just Kidz centres around Auckland, with an eighth opening soon. Four are already franchised, and the company is looking for suitable franchisees for other parts of the country, including a new centre in Warkworth.

‘Our pre-school centres are well-considered, purpose-built pre-schools, catering for young children’s best interests, loving care and educational needs,’ says Vanessa Henry, operations manager for Just Kidz. ‘Centres only employ qualified teachers or teachers in training to maintain our quality standards, and offer superior care by maintaining better-than-required child to adult ratios.

‘At the same time, we create a fun place to learn through play. Our educational programme is based on the Te Whāriki curriculum incorporating the educational philosophy of Reggio Emilia and RIE, which encourage children to be initiators and explorers, treating each child as a unique individual.’

Dedicated centres, dedicated teams

Although teachers are welcome, Just Kidz franchisees are not usually early childhood professionals themselves. Instead, they are people who know how to operate a good business and manage a dedicated team of staff, as well as sharing their passion for quality education. Each centre is purpose-built, often within new developments where there will be a ready demand, and high quality facilities and resources are put in place right from the start.

A fully set-up centre licensed for 75 children requires a total investment of around $750,000, including working capital, and will take approximately 6-12 months to break even. ‘Generally, a centre will recoup the initial investment within 5 years, so with a renewable 15-year agreement it can provide a very good return for franchisees,’ Vanessa confirms.

 ‘Just Kidz manages the design and build, as well as the council and Ministry licensing process. We also recruit experienced centre managers and staff to help the franchisee get off to the best possible start, and provide the training, programmes and systems to ensure compliance standards are met,’ says Vanessa. ‘Thereafter, there’s on-the-spot guidance with regular visits to provide support on all sorts of details from administration to environment, programme delivery and financial health checks.
