Topline Roofing launches specialist franchise opportunity nationwide

When Neil and Jennie Gillespie started their own business back in 1987, Neil already had roofing and plumbing industry experience, while Jennie brought spatial design, management and administration experience to the mix. Their trades business, incorporating metal and membrane roofing supply and installation, soon grew, and today the company has around 50 staff and 30 vehicles constantly on the go.

Topline Roofing’s experience and strict quality controls have seen them work on everything from residential homes to large scale re-roofing and cladding projects such as Mt Eden Corrections Facility and Smales Farm Beehive, as well as a multitude of tertiary institutions, schools and large commercial properties. Now they are looking to share their systems and expertise with other professionals in Auckland and around the country by creating a specialist franchise network of top quality roofing businesses, each with their own exclusive territory.

‘Rather than opening more branches ourselves, our strategy is to appoint Topline Roofing franchisees employing local people and servicing local customers to improve customer service and reduce travel times,’ say Neil and Jennie. ‘A tried and tested franchise formula delivers better and more consistent results than stand-alone operators; franchisees have a vested interest in building and running great businesses.’

Professional service, professional franchise

With 30 years of experience behind the company, the Topline Roofing franchise has been developed with professional input from the multiple award-winning team of specialists at Franchise Accountants. ‘We’ve always been hot on procedures and processes – this is an industry where safety has to come first,’ says Jennie. ‘We also commit to maintaining the highest business principles with a strong focus on quality, expertise, reputation, customer service, health and safety, timeline management and compliance. That’s given us an enviable portfolio of regular customers, including big name national property owners, managers and builders. They’re keen to see us establish Topline Roofing franchisees in other areas.’

The franchise is looking both for established roofing contractors seeking to expand and for new entrants with roofing expertise or a proven business track record in a completely different industry.

‘We would also like to think franchisees will follow our path upskilling and training apprentices from within local communities. Neil is an appointed Trustee and Deputy Chairman of the Apprenticeship Training Trust.’

Joining the team

‘Roofing contractors with four or so staff who are looking to grow their business really should give serious consideration to joining Topline Roofing,’ says Neil. ‘They’ve everything to gain: they will still be their own boss but belong to a bigger team with the benefits of having a large support network around them. We’ll provide comprehensive administration support, proven sales and marketing resources, on-going staff training and business mentoring.

‘As well as enhanced buying power with our approved suppliers enabling them to deliver exceptional quality and prices to their customers, there’s proprietary software to streamline day-to-day running of their business and an expert operations support team. These are all areas that it’s hard to work on or afford when you’re running an independent business.

‘Then there’s the brand value. Apart from the value of our existing relationships with national organisations, when it comes to retiring or on-selling, all your hard work under the Topline Roofing brand can command a much greater financial reward and a greater multiplier than you’d get being an individual business entity.’

Auckland and beyond

While Topline would like to bring on board existing roofing businesses, ‘We also welcome enquiries from those interested in starting up from scratch in Auckland and elsewhere,’ says Neil. ‘They could have roofing experience or a proven business track record in a completely different industry – even a different country. As members of Diversity Works NZ and being Immigration NZ-Accredited we are strong supporters of multiculturalism, so we very much welcome enquiries from immigrants with the right expertise.

‘The main criteria for a start-up Topline Roofing franchisee are to be in a financially sound position, a team player but able to work independently, have good communication skills, motivation and be goal-driven. You also need to be prepared to keep abreast of new roofing systems and technologies, and share the commitment to Topline Roofing’s business principles of quality, expertise, reputation and compliance.’

For an existing roofing business joining Topline, the investment will be negotiated on the basis of size and experience, while new start-ups require around $50,000 depending on location, territory size and other factors. ‘This includes systems and software as well as procedure and expert support programmes,’ says Jennie. ‘You will also require sufficient working capital for at least three months’ business expenses.’

Neil, Jennie and the Topline Roofing team are committed to helping their first franchisees succeed. ‘Rest assured we’ll be with you every step of the way to help you build a successful business that you’re proud of,’ Neil says. ‘While the building sector constantly changes, roofing is a specialist area and Topline Roofing is a market leader. Contact us today to find out more about joining the team.’
