Fastway Couriers - Globally Famous, Locally-Owned

Fastway Couriers is a true New Zealand success story and has the figures to prove it. The company began offering local deliveries in Hawkes Bay in 1983: today, it is the largest courier franchise in the world, with turnover in excess of $458 million over nine countries. Fastway has won over 45 franchise and industry awards with its 19 Regional Franchisees and 270 Courier Franchisees picking up and delivering 16 million parcels across the country every year. And it’s still growing, with opportunities nationwide for new people to join this hugely successful team and create their own business.
Fastway Couriers offers two tiers of franchises in New Zealand. Regional Franchisees operate as independent businesses servicing an exclusive territory and providing depot facilities, sales support, training and administration. Courier Franchisees carry out the actual courier work from their vehicle, building and maintaining customer relationships and providing pick up and delivery services within their exclusive territory.
Bringing Out The Best
Andy McDowell became the Regional Franchisee for Northland two years ago. After a career as a professional cricket coach, Andy took his talent for bringing out the best in people to a variety of sales and marketing roles. He was thrown into franchising at the deep end when his employer, New Zealand Dairy Foods, asked him to manage their South Island franchise project. ‘Luckily I had some good colleagues,’ he says modestly, ‘but it was certainly an excellent experience.’
When the time came for a change, Andy and his wife moved back to Northland where Andy experienced the other side of franchising by becoming the local dairy franchisee. ‘I doubled its revenue inside a year and sold it, then looked for another, bigger challenge. An advert for the Fastway Couriers Regional Franchise caught my eye: it suited my skills and ambitions, it was very convenient for my growing family and my investigations soon revealed that Fastway is a solid, robust franchise system with strong credibility.’
Andy says the Northland region, whose network runs from Warkworth to Kaitaia, was ‘a little run down’ when he bought it. ‘It’s testament to the strength of the Fastway system that it could be put back on its feet quite quickly,’ he says. ‘All I had to do was re-apply the model to get it working properly and take advantage of the area’s potential. There are great opportunities for growth with businesses looking for better ways of getting their goods around and big increases in traffic caused by the growth of on-line trading. Everyone knows it has been a tough economy since April 2008 and fuel prices hikes haven’t helped, yet during that time Fastway has grown stronger and all our business plans and KPIs are on target.’ These results helped Andy win Fastway’s Regional Franchisee of the Year award for 2010.
‘What really makes Fastway stand out is that rather than using contractors who don’t have a real investment in their success, each Fastway business is locally-owned. We genuinely care about our clients and all that we can do for them. Courier Franchisees don’t just deliver parcels. They work with their customers to deliver bottom line savings and build relationships. As owners of their own business, both Courier Franchisees and Regional Franchisees have a vested interest in giving customers the most honest, reliable and friendly service possible.’
Another key factor in Fastway’s success has been the level of training and support received by franchisees. ‘Our Franchise Support Office team provide ongoing assistance and direction with the aim of growing each and every business in the network,’ says Bruce Speers, Fastway New Zealand’s CEO. ‘This covers sales, marketing, IT, business planning, finance and administration. All Regional Franchisees receive at least two days per month of on-the-ground support, and Courier Franchisees also have regular visits to help them reach their full potential. We have put a huge amount of experience into creating the best possible franchise opportunity and we want to help all our franchisees get the most out of it. It’s this approach that has helped both Regional and Courier Franchisees throughout the country to develop long-term businesses and achieve excellent profits.’
Despite the downturn, Fastway New Zealand achieved 8% growth during 2009 and the business is still growing, meaning that the company is constantly looking for good new people at all levels. ‘Courier Franchises start from around $25,000,’ says Bruce. ‘We recognise that starting your own business can be a big step, so we often provide a guaranteed income for a number of months for our new Courier Franchisees. Once you have grown your business, you can split your territory, sell part and generate a capital gain. That means that new franchisees can often step into a business with established customers as a base for growth.
‘Regional Franchises also come up from time to time as existing franchisees retire or move on. As Andy has shown in Northland, these can also be superb opportunities for the right people so if you are interested, have a look at our website or give me a call.’
