Epiphany Café

Epiphany Café was born from a love of coffee – and donuts. Now, you might have read a bit about a US donut chain opening in Auckland recently, but don’t let that confuse you. What we’re talking about here is pillow-soft, artisanal gourmet donuts, served with a cup of the finest coffee – and a full café menu, too.

It’s a combination that has seen the chain grow rapidly from a single store in Hamilton to six outlets in the Upper North Island already, with five more opening soon. The brand is so popular that it already has a waiting list of fifteen people who want to become franchisees. Now Epiphany Café is looking for three master franchisees who will expand and support the brand in the Upper and Lower North Island and the South Island.

What’s made Epiphany Café so successful in New Zealand where other donut-based businesses have struggled? Jeths Lacson, who developed the business with business partner Mark Epifanio, has a simple answer: ‘Quality. We start with premium ingredients from New Zealand that make an insanely soft donut base. Then, each donut ring is rolled, shaped, flavoured, and designed by hand. It takes time to make them, but we wouldn’t have it any other way because we want each bite to be as heavenly as the last.

‘There’s a range of around 30 flavours, including crème brulee, white chocolate passionfruit, black forest, salted caramel, green tea and tiramisu, with different flavours on different days to create a sense of occasion. Our cafés also offer breakfast and lunch menus, cakes, slices, quiches, cookies and muffins, savouries including risotto and soups, and our drink menu includes teas, smoothies and frappés.’

central production, wide market

It may sound like a lot of work, but most items are produced at a central bakery and delivered to local Epiphany Café stores and kiosks, ensuring consistent quality and reducing the footprint and equipment needed by each franchisee. ‘This is why we are looking to appoint master franchisees for the other regions,’ explains Mark.

‘As well as helping new sub-franchisees get established in their territory, master franchisees also need to own and manage their own bakery and warehouse facility. This will supply the stores and kiosks, and may also offer a range of café products and baked goods to outlets outside the group. We anticipate the total investment with the production line being around $800,000 to $1 million. It’s not a small investment, but then it’s not a small opportunity – we have a line of people who can’t wait to open their own Epiphany Café.’

proven business model

That would be people like Auckland-based accountant Eddie Agnes, who has just opened his first Epiphany Café at Northwest Mall. Eddie has 20 years’ experience in finance and management, so you can be sure he’s been over the business model carefully. ‘I chose Epiphany Café because the brand is strong, there’s a good training programme, operational and management support, and the image is trendy, funky and fun.’ Best of all, it’s a 100 percent New Zealand-owned brand proven in the New Zealand market.

Hamilton-based sales consultant Yijia Ma has been operating his Epiphany Café in Chartwell Shopping Centre since mid-2017, and really appreciates the support which allows him to focus on running his business efficiently and profitably. ‘It’s enjoyable growing a business that customers love,’ he smiles.

do you have what it takes?

For the three master franchisee opportunities, Jeths is looking for individuals, entrepreneurs, companies or partnerships to establish Epiphany Café in their region and appoint, train and manage sub-franchisees. Candidates will need to be:

  • Experienced in the food sector with strong business management skills.
  • Well-capitalised, able to build a highly profitable business over time.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, while being able to follow and enforce proven systems for running a successful business.
  • Creative thinker who can drive the aggressive growth of sub-franchisees in their region.
  • Honesty and integrity in dealing with staff, sub-franchisees, the franchisor, suppliers and partners.
  • Belief in, understanding of and passion for the Epiphany Café brand and concept.
  • Community involvement and the drive to expand in your region.
  • Positive leadership and motivational skills.

a major role in a growing market

‘For the right people or company, this is an opportunity to play a major role in the development of a unique brand in a large and growing market,’ says Jeths. ‘It’s no secret that coffee and good food is in demand, especially in today’s fast-paced society, and Epiphany Café has something different to offer. Whether you need an early-morning energy boost, a family-friendly bite or a leisurely weekend break, you’ll find what you’re looking for at your local Epiphany Café – where chill time never tasted so good.

‘Our business model has been professionally-developed and is now proven in multiple locations from shopping malls to high streets. The option of cafés or kiosks means that master franchisees and sub-franchises are able to develop outlets in cities, suburbs, towns and all sort of regional centres, so there is huge potential.

‘If you have the qualities we are looking for, please contact us without delay to find out more about the Epiphany Café master franchise opportunity.’
