When Dan and Kylie Sheridan decided to work together, they had plenty of choice. Kylie has a retail and travel background, while Dan was a Major in the NZ Army with a diploma in business studies and a masters degree in strategic implementation.

‘Having always gone where we were posted, when I became a reservist we chose to move to Tauranga,’ says Dan. ‘We wanted a franchise for our first foray into business so, with professional help, we developed a shortlist. Dream Doors appealed, partly because it was within our area of experience – we’ve done a few renovations together – but also because of the opportunity it offered. The product, systems and support were all clearly very professional, and we could start the ball rolling as a husband-and-wife unit then build our team as the customer base grew.’

Dream Doors supplies and fits replacement doors, surfaces and fittings to restore a home’s looks and value for a fraction of the cost and wastage of building new units. Since franchisor Derek Lilly set up in Wanaka in 2008, it has since expanded throughout New Zealand, and in Australia and the USA, too. Because Dream Doors doesn’t require a showroom or staff immediately, start-up is both efficient and affordable.

‘Still in our first year, we’ve done around 30 kitchen facelifts, new kitchens, an upmarket café fit-out and doctors’ reception and exam rooms,’ says Dan. ‘The Dream Doors training gave us a lot of confidence; the back-end systems are very thorough, and the support group are very good at prioritising things that help you advance.’ Coming from a military man, that’s praise indeed.

wide market, happy clients

Dan has developed a pool of talented sub-contractors through work on all sorts of projects. ‘The market for kitchen renovations is actually very wide. There are facelifts for home owners and landlords, investors, people selling houses, people buying houses, tired apartments, even staff rooms in workplaces. We started slowly, and initially Kylie was focused on helping our three kids settle in our new community, but now we’re a well-oiled team. The Dream Doors system delivers plenty of leads and our conversion rate is improving all the time – in fact, we’re ahead of schedule.’

Dan says they are now getting referrals from happy clients, ‘And people are so proud they are offering to let us show their kitchen to others who want to see what we can do.’

Dream Doors still has territories available in many parts of the country, as well as Australia and the US. The investment required is just $75,000 with a further $100,000 operating capital on hand. ‘Dream Doors provides the backbone for you to build a proper business which can be highly profitable,’ concludes Dan. ‘It’s hard work at the start but follow the plan and it works. Really, it’s up to you.’
