Jim’s Mowing has plenty of work for franchisees wanting small businesses or large
What are the big advantages of Jim’s Mowing?’ asks Gavin McGlashan. ‘Flexibility, a solid income with a realistic turnover of well over $100,000 pa, and more work than you could possibly want.
‘I can prove it, too,’ says the area franchisor for Jim’s Mowing in the Lower North Island. ‘This year I’ve already had to turn down 1500 customers and that means I have a huge shortage of franchisees. I need people right now, and they can start today!’ It’s a message echoed by his colleagues all around the country from Northland to Otago. There are over 230 Jim’s Mowing franchisees already, giving the franchise enormous brand awareness, and room for many more.
As area franchisor, Gavin (pictured right) has helped over 40 Jim’s Mowing franchisees to learn, manage and market their businesses. It’s a role he is well suited for: a builder by trade before turning to real estate, he says part of his ethos is helping people. ‘Over the years I’ve been heavily involved with the Scouts and Business Network International. Having stopped selling houses I was looking for a business, but when a colleague handed me the prospectus for Jim’s Mowing I said, “Lawnmowing? I’m a builder!” That was 13 years ago, and I’ve never once regretted my decision to buy the franchise.
‘I knew how to run a business from my building days and the franchise system allows me to coach people in growing their business without having to charge them dollars per hour. It’s what we do – I help people into business, and spend as much time with them as they need or want. They don’t have to worry about how much it is costing them either, as that’s how the Jim’s Mowing franchise system works.
‘The great thing is Jim’s is so successful as a model. One of my franchisees is an ex-builder like me and loves the business because he can use all his skills. He barely touches a lawn-mower during the winter – he tackles all the other work his clients need from new fences to putting in windows, major tree work to hedge-trimming and everything in-between. That’s the great thing about Jim’s Mowing – you have a group of regular clients and they quickly latch on to all the other things that you can do for them.’
In addition to all the repeat business, Jim’s Mowing franchisees get a lot of new work through the company’s website and 0800 number. ‘Another advantage is that a lot of clients regularly call after-hours and Jim’s has its own call centre, so franchisees can have a life,’ says Gavin. ‘I look after advertising locally, so they don’t have to worry about that, either. We have a simple formula: if we have more than enough work, we don’t advertise. At present, for example, I’m only advertising in New Plymouth because we have three new franchisees there, but work tends to build up fast so that won’t last long.’
Another of Gavin’s roles is to ensure new clients are allocated to franchisees fairly. ‘Everyone has their own territory so they are offered any new work in their territory first, but if they already have all the work they want, we will offer it to another franchisee. Most of our established franchisees have more than enough work, but if they want to grow their business Jim’s is flexible enough to allow them to employ people. We have several franchisees who have built up quite sizeable businesses that way, which is why we suit all kinds of people – those who are happy with small operations, and those who want to become big business managers.’
Gavin says that the most important qualities for any franchisee are people skills and life skills. ‘As long as you have those, we can teach you the rest. Once you’ve gone through the training, if you need more help, or time or advice, or just want to talk things through, we’re there for you.
‘There’s no doubt in my mind that Jim’s Mowing is a fantastic investment for anyone who has the motivation to get out of bed in the morning. For a $30-$40,000 investment you can be turning over more than $100,000 in a year. In addition, if you don’t want to employ people then, once you have all the work you want, you can sell off part of your territory to another franchisee. Some of our franchisees have done that several times, giving them a nice capital gain each time.
Jim’s Mowing franchises are available for immediate start throughout most of the country. ‘Apart from a vehicle, the investment includes most of your equipment, a trailer and power tools, plus a good batch of clients to get you going,’ says Gavin. ‘Give us a call and talk to your local area franchisor – we’re here to help.’
