Dennis Anderson found the purpose-built Jim's Dog Wash trailer brilliantly suited to the task

When her friends heard Angela Anderson’s plans to expand her successful dog grooming parlour and grooming academy by becoming a Jim’s Dog Wash franchisee, they suggested she was barking mad. ‘Why do you need a franchise?’ they asked. ‘Do it on your own,’ they said. After all, Angela was New Zealand’s first Internationally Certified Master Groomer, twice-certified Sasha Reiss poodle grooming expert and, on a number of occasions, a member of the Groomteam representing New Zealand dog grooming on the world stage.

Angela quickly pointed out that it wouldn’t be her operating the Jim’s Dog Wash trailer but her husband Dennis. He had never groomed before, so it was an ideal test – would the model work for someone with no experience? Having grown her business from a start-up, Angela was well aware of the branding, marketing, business systems and other financial benefits of joining a franchise, especially when it’s as reputable and long-standing as Jim’s Group, the world’s largest home services franchise system.

Two years ago, the couple set the wheels in motion. While she continued working in her business, Dennis hitched up his brand-new, fully-equipped Jim’s Dog Wash trailer and hit the road on Auckland’s North Shore. The couple soon learned the financial and personal benefits of the Jim’s Group business model, and experienced just what it means to have that bearded man in the floppy hat on their mobile dog wash trailer – instant recognition and a ready-made reputation.’

full-time opportunities

Last year, Angela and Dennis enthusiastically agreed to step up from territory franchisee to North Island franchisor: Dennis to recruit and support new Jim’s Dog Wash franchisees and Angela to be the official washing and grooming trainer for the North Island. For a new franchisee, being trained by arguably the country’s best dog groomer is a benefit of incalculable value. They’ll find plenty of business awaiting them, too – New Zealand has one of the world’s highest rates of dog ownership.

‘A 2011 survey showed over 700,000 registered dogs across 29 percent of the country’s households,’ says Angela, ‘and I suspect those figures have increased substantially since then. From our own experience, we can assure anyone interested in a Jim’s Dog Wash franchise that they will be amazed at just how quickly they can build the client base necessary to earn a good target income.’

Jim’s Dog Wash allows the flexibility to be a full-time or part-time business where the franchisee could, for example, work only during school hours. ‘At the full-time end of the scale, I was very pleased when Dennis did his first $4,000 week, so there’s enormous potential for the right people,’ Angela says.

‘The Jim’s Group Pay-for-Work guarantee goes a long way towards helping them establish their business at this level. It provides an agreed amount every week to cover business development activities such as free dog washes: this is not a hand-out but payment for getting out there and making things happen, and it really works. We already have two franchisees getting established in Tauranga and another about to start in South Auckland.’

everything you need

The $30,000 +gst franchise fee includes a full month’s training with accommodation on-site in Auckland. ‘It sets Jim’s Dog Wash apart from other grooming services that we consider this level of training is what you need to offer a totally professional service,’ says Angela. ‘It’s not all about the dog, either – we also teach customer relations techniques such as how to draw a new client out on what they want for their fur child.’

New franchisees also have three days’ induction on the business side of things, either in Auckland or Jim’s Group head office in Melbourne. On top of all this, the franchise fee includes an exclusive territory based on 4,000 homes, a call centre to both generate leads and handle enquiries when you are working, uniforms and business manuals.

The only other thing you’ll need is the bright red mobile wash trailer, which Dennis has found brilliantly suited to the task. This costs $25,000 +gst and delivery costs, and consists of a stylishly-moulded fibreglass unit mounted on a galvanised trailer with such franchisee- and dog-friendly features as electrically-controlled height-adjustable grooming tables, an easily accessible hydrobath, hot and cold water options, drying blowers and plenty of natural and artificial light so the dogs don’t get unnerved.

On an ongoing basis, there’s a monthly fee that remains stable as your business grows, no lead fees on clients you find yourself, marketing with the Jim’s brand and local support from Dennis and Angela. ‘I’m readily available to help franchisees to improve their skills,’ Angela offers.

‘All you need at each client’s home is a power source and a hose. Some dogs can take just 15 minutes while others are over two hours, so you get a lot of variety – and a lot of repeat business which means recurring income. If you are fit, determined to succeed in your own business and (of course) love dogs, it’s a great opportunity.

‘To learn more, call us now. We’ve got dog owners throughout New Zealand scratching at the door!’
