Elaine Orchard lost her job as a factory manager after the Christchurch earthquake but, five years after buying her own V.I.P. lawn and garden franchise, she considers herself lucky. 

‘I’d lived in an apartment and had never even mown a lawn until a couple of years before joining V.I.P., but when I saw the franchise for sale, it just clicked. I had no job and no money, but after meeting Estelle Logan (who, with her husband John, is the national franchisor for New Zealand) then spending a day out with another franchisee and being approved for a loan, it all lined up as a chance worth taking – and it was. 

‘I’m in control of my life now, and the financial reward matches the time I choose to put in. I have enough work for six days every week, but I employ someone so I only need to work five. One of the great things about the V.I.P. system is that it allows franchisees to sell work back to the franchise if we have more work than we want to handle or we want to focus on servicing a smaller area. That gives you a nice lump sum payment. A couple of months ago, I sold 18 customers back for other franchisees to take over, and I’ve already filled those spots through referrals from existing customers. V.I.P. has such a great reputation and the support from the franchise is excellent.’ 

Elaine’s franchise covers all sorts of outdoor jobs including lawnmowing, gardening, pruning and more, which allows her to maintain her income throughout the year. ‘I’ve never been short of work in over five years,’ she laughs. ‘As my customers have got to know and trust me, they’ve asked me to do more work. I’ve found that if you build good customer relationships and take pride in the work you do, it is easy to succeed  with V.I.P.’

V.I.P. offers two different types of franchise: outdoor, like Elaine’s, and indoor (all types of cleaning). It’s the flexibility that comes with V.I.P. that first attracted indoor franchisee Karishma Chand. 

‘I started talking to an existing franchisee whose child goes to daycare with my daughter. I was doing shift work at Burger King and finding it a challenge to juggle my schedule with childcare. She encouraged me to look into the franchise as a means of working the hours I wanted as well as building a business. 

‘One of the key differences with V.I.P. is the four-week paid training programme they give new franchisees. This gave me confidence and, as well as teaching me how to provide a professional standard of cleaning quickly and efficiently, taught me the basics of running my own business. During this time I also met the customers in my area. Having good relationships with them gave me the opportunity to build my customer base through personal recommendations.’ 

Karishma started small in New Lynn and has also taken advantage of V.I.P.’s support to build her business. ‘I often get calls with the details of new clients, asking if I want to take on any more work, and they often lead to more referrals and repeat work, so I have been able to grow at my own pace. This is the first time I’ve run a business, and knowing the amount of support and experience behind me has made it a lot less scary. We have a good, communicative relationship: there are regular calls and monthly meetings with the franchisor team and other franchisees, so you never feel on your own.’ 

Being a V.I.P. franchisee not only allows Karishma to manage her time between family and work commitments, but is helping her work towards her life goals. ‘We want to buy our first house next year. Being able to work a good, consistent number of hours and earning well without sacrificing time spent with family makes all the difference. We now know that our goal is achievable – and soon!’
