Tint Pro is looking for high-quality window tinting licensees throughout New Zealand

Open the Yellow Pages and you might get the impression from the number of advertisers that window tinting must be an easy way to make money. But it's not so easy to do it properly, according to Rolf Stucki of Tint ProTM. ‘Without the right training and the right materials, it's easy to make a costly mistake and damage your reputation rather than enhancing it.'

Rolf should know. Tint Pro uses Johnson and the German-made Hûper Optik® window films and operates a network of licensed applicators covering Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula. Now he is looking for just 17 more licensees to cover the whole country.

‘Glass is a major feature in most modern buildings and window tinting is becoming a common feature,' says Rolf. ‘Most people in New Zealand think of it as fade protection against the sun's powerful UV rays, but it's not just rays that cause fading - it's heat as well. That's why we have chosen to import ceramic films as the most suitable for New Zealand conditions. They're at the cutting edge of what's available and offer superb optical clarity.'

Unlike many people who start window tinting because it seems an easy way to make money, Rolf has been 14 years in the window tinting business and his business partner 20 years. ‘Our business is half residential, half commercial,' he says. ‘We don't do cars because tinting windows in buildings is a specialist area.' He says the building standards which came into force at the end of last year are a good example of the need to stay up-to-date with current practice. ‘And issues like tinting double-glazed windows offer challenges. Use the wrong film and you'll get condensation clouding the view and an unhappy householder. You need the right product and the right training, and that's what we provide.'

Tint Pro offers over 80 different top quality films although, as Rolf Stucki is quick to point out, licensees don't carry the whole range. ‘They only need to stock five or six of the most commonly-used types, but we have the rest,' he says. ‘That's why we educate licensees about the need to get a balance between comfort and performance in a building - so they can consult and get the best possible results for their clients.'

Stand-Alone Or Add-On

The Tint Pro licence is available both as a stand-alone operation or, in smaller towns, as an add-on to a complementary business. ‘It's not hard to sell window tinting once you explain the benefits,' says Rolf, ‘so if you are already talking to homeowners then it's an ideal opportunity to offer an extra feature.'

The investment of $20,000+gst includes at least two weeks in Auckland and a week in Sydney learning the basics of the business, although Rolf says it normally takes a little longer to become truly proficient. A variety of marketing material is provided and Rolf personally accompanies new licensees on their first jobs. ‘We place heavy emphasis on ongoing practical support, too,' he says. ‘The business provides a good cash flow as most residential installations can be completed in a day and customers pay on completion. A gross profit on film of 60% provides a high margin.'

What type of people make good Tint Pro licensees? ‘It's not physically demanding, but you need to be reasonably fit and pretty practical. You also need to speak good English, because the initial consultation is an important part of the job. We want honest people who aren't afraid of hard work and have a drive to succeed. In return, we can offer an opportunity to become part of the best in the business.'
