Top exec finds Wide Span Sheds meet his personal and financial goals
When you combine a good franchise with a creative franchisee, all sorts of interesting things can happen.
Peter Darnell, the business development manager for Wide Span Sheds, remembers being impressed the moment he saw Laurence Greig’s CV: law graduate, Certified Company Director with the NZ Institute of Directors, Certified Risk and Compliance Management Professional with the International Association of Risk and Compliance Professionals, and more.
‘Laurence has over 30 years’ experience in private and government sectors in the areas of strategic management, change and innovation, Peter says. ‘On top of all that, he spent eight years running HoneyLab, the kanuka honey-based skin treatment company he established with scientist, Dr Shaun Holt. It’s a combination that makes him exactly the sort of person Wide Span Sheds is looking for.
‘In return, Laurence had identified Wide Span Sheds as a high-return, multi-faceted opportunity where his experience and entrepreneurial flair could flourish. He saw the franchise as enabling him to accomplish a number of financial and personal goals. I’d like to think his story will encourage skilled executives to forget about suit-and-tie futures and think, “This could be me.”’
From top exec to building sheds might sound like a big step, but these aren’t garden sheds. Part of the family-owned Steelx Group, Wide Span Sheds is Australasia’s fastest-growing supplier of steel building kits. Its products include everything from small domestic buildings, farm and agribusiness structures to large commercial premises and warehouses, with quality engineering offering clear spans of up to 27 metres wide by over 200 metres long. With long-established franchisees in the upper North Island having proven that there is a huge market for its unique range here, Peter is looking to find more people like Laurence who can take the opportunity and run with it.
Laurence bought his franchise after moving from Wellington to New Plymouth with partner Hazel. He had originally planned to retire, but was soon bursting with enthusiasm for Taranaki as a land of opportunity and found Wide Span Sheds an ideal outlet for his energy and experience. Recently, he’s been joined by his son, Gulliver.
With full support from the franchisor team, Laurence set out to maximise the opportunity by creating unique premises to showcase the company in the Taranaki market. ‘Ours is a purpose-built fit-out in a high visibility area,’ Laurence explains. ‘We have two customer areas. The first displays products and components, and is where Gulliver or I take a potential customer through design possibilities. We feed these into Wide Span Sheds’ bespoke software that calculates site-specific engineering and material requirements then shows the building as a 2-D image on a big screen.
‘Next we go to the second area, the “wow zone”. Using an iPad, Wide Span Sheds’ in-house Augmented Reality app brings the proposed building to life as a 3D image. Customers can then look at the building from various angles and even go inside. Most people find it hard to visualise spaces so being able to have a virtual reality building is definitely a major competitive benefit for Wide Span Sheds franchisees.’
Because Wide Span Sheds’ exclusive supplier Metalcraft manufactures the components for each building kit, franchisees don’t need storage space. However, the Taranaki site has room for utes and equipment used by assemblers who are recruited, trained and well-paid as part of Laurence’s commitment to giving a chance to those whose backgrounds make finding work difficult. ‘Having in-house staff means we build up expertise faster and provides customers with far more reliable completion dates than competitors using contractors,’ Laurence says.
Since opening their doors in late 2017, Laurence and Gulliver have been kept busy with quotes and work mostly generated by Wide Span Sheds’ strong online presence. ‘We’re finding lots of interest from lifestylers for barns and horse arenas, and from the dairy industry,’ says Laurence. ‘One farmer showed up with a photo of his milk shed which had been flattened by Cyclone Gita – the replacement will cover close to half a hectare under the one roof. We are also working on setting up sales agents in growth centres such as Hawera who will help promote the Wide Span Sheds solutions.’
The franchise fee for a Wide Span Sheds territory is $95,000 +gst, which covers all training including flights to the franchise headquarters on the Gold Coast. $28,000 of the fee is allocated to setting up premises and marketing programmes. Franchisee support services, on-going software development and other activities are funded through a small percentage of the total value of the Bill of Materials for jobs undertaken by each franchisee.
As Peter says, ‘Given his background, you can be sure Laurence conducted meticulous due diligence on the franchise, which should give other high-flyers confidence. They’ll have to be quick, though – currently we have just six North Island areas available and Laurence is seriously evaluating investing in a second territory. Call me now and let’s start talking.’
