Paul McCully 'There's huge demand for our services, and more opportunities for new franchisees'

Paul McCully is in his tenth year as a Jim’s Test & Tag franchisee and has clearly loved every minute of it. ‘I’m quite young in comparison with some of the other franchisees – many enjoy the business so much they carry on well past retirement age. The franchise provides a good return and gives you the flexibility and freedom to enjoy that boat or whatever.’ 

Jim’s Test & Tag provides testing and tagging services to electrical equipment in workplaces throughout the country, as well as fire extinguisher inspections and sales. Health and Safety regulations mean all equipment is subject to mandatory inspections in accordance with standards AS/NZS3760:2010, while fire extinguisher inspections are similarly mandated under NZS 4503:2005. ‘All in all, that means no shortage of work,’ says Paul happily. 

Paul used to be a sales rep with an electrical wholesaler when he recognised the opportunity. ‘Ten years ago, the electrical test and  tagging business was just gearing up, and I could see I’d be getting in  on the ground floor. As part of the international Jim’s Group, the franchise would give me a head start so it looked like a real opportunity to grow  my own business. 

‘Well, as we know, many start-up businesses don’t survive the first year but, despite the 2008 global financial crisis, I was right. Since that time, of course, there have been huge changes in the industry. We were the educators when we started, but today everything has to be compliant – and WorkSafe check workplaces to make sure that’s the case. It’s meant huge demand for our services, and more opportunities for new franchisees.’ 

training, support and service

Another big draw-card for Paul was the intensive training all Jim’s Test & Tag franchisees undergo. ‘We are, without a shadow of a doubt, the most comprehensively-trained people in the industry in Australasia,’ he says. ‘I came from an electrical background but many of my colleagues have wide and varied previous careers. You don’t need electrical qualifications and the training covers everything you need to know about doing the job and running your own business. There are over 40 Jim’s Test & Tag franchisees in New Zealand which means we can draw off the group  and share lessons and experiences on an ongoing basis.’ 

Paul’s large South Island area involves a lot of travelling. ‘As well being the local franchisor I have my own regular customers, many of whom I’ve got to know well over the years,’ he says. ‘Getting to know your regular client base is an essential quality. You need to learn about them and find out what spins their wheels, and you must leave them with a good impression every time. That way, you make things easier for each other and are more efficient – which makes your bottom line even better.’ 

ticking the boxes

Previously a sheet metal engineer, Darrell Webber joined Jim’s Test & Tag in early 2015. ‘I’d been doing the same thing for 25 years and when this popped up it ticked all the right boxes,’ he says. ‘I wanted to be my own boss and I wanted to work less – I’d been doing seven days some weeks and I wanted my weekends back. I liked the way Jim’s was set up and the way they gave me all the information and answered all my questions. I had thought about doing something on my own, but I realise now it would have cost a lot more and wouldn’t have been as profitable.’ 

In just over two years, Darrell has obviously done a few things right and built a good business, as he was recently named Franchisee of the Year for Jim’s Test & Tag. These awards are selected according to very stringent criteria and given to the best of the best. I was shocked, but it was a nice, unexpected shock,’ laughs Darrell. 

‘I always try to keep a high standard throughout my work – never over-promise and always try to over-deliver. If you leave everything just that bit tidier after a job than it was before, and you always give clear, detailed reports, customers will appreciate it.’ 

rewarding excellence

Meanwhile, Paul McCully was Jim’s Test & Tag’s Franchisor of the Year. ‘I think there were lots of others equally deserving but it’s always fantastic to have recognition from your peers,’ he says. ‘It is part of our values and trademark: you challenge people in the group if they are not doing the right thing, and you reward them if they are. It is not a monetary thing, it’s about recognising you’ve done great work for your franchisees and customers.’ 

Both Paul and Darrell can see long futures with Jim’s Test & Tag. ‘There is increasing demand for our services and we need more people all over the country to handle it. The investment of around $75,000 includes comprehensive training over the Tasman, and all the equipment necessary to provide a totally professional service.
