Airport find leads to opportunity for Appliance Tagging Services franchisee

Andrew Renfrey, ATS 'The business keeps growing & because testing is required there is so much demand'
Buying a franchise on the back of a coffee meeting at an airport is not exactly recommended but, as Andrew Renfrey points out, he was looking for his own business, and did have a gut feeling about this one. It helped that the franchise had a first-class reputation.
Andrew was working for an air freight company in Adelaide when he found a business magazine ‘in the belly of an aircraft. It contained a survey of the fastest-growing franchises and the best turnovers,’ he says. ‘When I found Appliance Tagging Services (ATS) high up on both lists, I gave them a call. It so happened that the founders, Ainslie and Sarah Allen, were coming through Adelaide that weekend – hence the coffee.’
Andrew didn’t just go on gut feel; he took the figures to his accountant who was ‘dead impressed. ATS have set up a brilliant system in which all a franchisee has to do is sell the service and do the work. The invoicing and money-chasing is all done by the franchisor, so we are guaranteed to get paid every month. It’s very efficient because it leaves us free to focus on growing the business.’
The system works, says Steve Wren, the company’s National Sales Manager. ‘Some of our 60-plus franchisees in Australia are turning over more than three times their initial investment every year, with excellent margins giving them great returns.’
ATS carries out testing and tagging of electrical equipment in workplaces – a compliance requirement for most businesses under increasingly strict health and safety regulations on both sides of the Tasman. The company was founded in 2006, when the Allens realised that, although there was massive demand for a reliable national testing network, the weak link in many mobile businesses is paperwork and admin. ‘That’s especially important when you’re dealing with something which is a safety requirement,’ Steve points out.
‘You’ve got to show that your customers are compliant with the law, and you’ve got to keep them compliant with regular visits. Our high-tech systems do all that for franchisees so that, after the initial testing and tagging, clients have access to an online portal in which all the information is stored and a schedule is established for re-checking at appropriate intervals. It is probably the best such facility in the industry.’
With over 15,000 clients and attending over 26,000 sites, ATS is the leading provider of tagging services in Australia and is now expanding in New Zealand. Franchisees don’t need electrical qualifications, just attention to detail, an interest in the safety industry and the desire to grow a great business. The investment required is $72,500 +gst.
‘A two-week intensive training course in Melbourne will equip you with everything you need to run your own business in a growth industry,’ says Steve. ‘We have growing demand from our international clients to put some feet on the ground in New Zealand, so give me a call. The first three franchisees to sign up will receive a substantial discount on their investment.’
‘I’ve owned my franchise since 2009 and, honestly, the more I’ve put in, the more I’ve got out of it,’ says Andrew. ‘The business keeps growing and because testing is required there is so much demand that I have a second technician to help me get through the work and give me the lifestyle I want.
‘I’m very active in business and community spheres. I’m planning a marathon for the city in four years and a swimming marathon in five, which puts me in contact with many businesses. Needless to say, my ATS business card goes with me, and I got one huge contract from talking to a big government department about it. I handed over my card and they said “Oh, you do that, do you? We really like the reporting system you’ve got – can you fit us in?” Somehow, I managed it,’ he smiles.
‘If you enjoy meeting people this is a great business – I’ve had a great return from that first cup of coffee!’
