18 July 2017: updated - McDonald's has teamed up with UberEats to deliver Big Macs to your doorstep. It's now available from ten Auckland outlets and overseas experience suggests the service will grow.

McDonald’s New Zealand is launching home delivery – called, inevitably, ‘McDelivery’ – in a new partnership with food delivery service UberEats. This follows successful trials between the companies in the USA, which is expanding the service to more than 3,500 locations there. McDonald’s has offered delivery for years in parts of the Middle East and Asia, and CNBC has reported that McDonald’s earns ‘nearly $1 billion in delivery sales globally.’

UberEats is not exclusive to McDonald’s. In our report on food franchising earlier this year, we revealed that one Burger Wisconsin franchisee had increased sales by 30 percent in a single week after signing up with UberEats, with other franchisees reporting additional revenue of more than $17,000 in a single week from using the service. However, it’s not cheap – as well as charging the customer a delivery fee, UberEats also charges the restaurateur a hefty margin, reportedly around a third (although McDonald’s and other large franchises will presumably have negotiated a preferential rate).

The McDelivery service was initially available only from McDonald’s Greenlane, and has now been extended to ten more:

  • Grey Lynn
  • Pt Chev
  • Balmoral
  • Royal Oak
  • Britomart
  • Quay St
  • Akoranga Dr
  • Glenfield
  • Wairau Rd
  • Belmont

The service will operate within a 10-minute delivery zone to ensure hot, quality food. Customers can choose from nearly the full range of menu items including burgers, fries, wraps, McMuffins, desserts and McCafé coffee.

To celebrate the launch of McDelivery, customers ordering McDelivery from participating restaurants today will receive an item from the McDelivery Collection. Items are extremely limited and will be given to customers on a first in, first served basis while stocks last.

‘The introduction of our delivery trial last year proved to be very popular, and we’ve had many requests to expand the service,’ says Dave Howse, Managing Director of McDonald’s New Zealand. ‘By partnering with UberEats we’re able to extend the availability of McDelivery, providing our customers with the food they love and new levels of convenience.’
