Ankit Kumar "Cookright Filtering Services offered me one of the best opportunities around, but I didn't expect so much work so quickly!"
Ankit Kumar is only 25 but his first business has grown so much since he bought it last year that he already has two employees to meet demand. ‘I knew Cookright Filtering Services offered me one of the best opportunities around, but I didn’t expect so much work so quickly!’ he says.
Cookright services commercial kitchens and specialises in the cleaning of deep fryers, hoods and flues, disposal of used cooking oil and the sale of new oil. ‘Our main competition is kitchen staff doing the job themselves,’ says Steve McMullen, Cookright’s managing director. ‘However, it’s not a popular job as they don’t have the equipment or training to do it properly, efficiently and safely. Changes to health and safety regulations, hygiene standards and insurance requirements mean kitchens rely on us more and more.
‘Cookright makes it easy and convenient: we have all the equipment and skills to do the job better than they can do themselves, and all the chef has to do in the morning is come in and turn on a freshly-cleaned fryer. As far as they’re concerned, their local Cookright franchisee is the kitchen hero!’
It was being the kitchen hero that persuaded Ankit to leave his beloved Christchurch and buy the Wellington Cookright franchise. ‘My previous work was concerned with kitchen cleanliness, but I could see Cookright offered me far greater opportunities to grow and develop a business. While we are being the kitchen hero it is easy to quote for all the other unpopular kitchen jobs such as flue and hood cleaning. These are also frequently handled inadequately by staff and, along with new oil supply, present an opportunity to add value to every visit and make my business even more efficient and lucrative.’
Perhaps surprisingly, Cookright franchisees aren’t doing a dirty job. ‘The process is so clean I can wear tidy clothes and go straight from cleaning a deep fryer to visiting new clients,’ says Ankit. ‘You need to be self-motivated, though, and it helps to be an early starter!’
Oil disposal has always been a problem for kitchens and local councils, but Cookright has solved the problem by having used oil processed to produce biodiesel – thus saving the New Zealand economy valuable dollars that would otherwise be spent importing diesel from overseas. ‘Practising what we preach, some of our franchisees have already converted their vans to run on biodiesel,’ says Steve. ‘The vans smell good, too!’
Cookright franchises start from around $50,000 plus van and can be very profitable indeed. ‘As it was my first business, I was very grateful for the training I received and all the business support Cookright has given me since,’ says Ankit. ‘I was a little nervous starting out but now I’m much more confident and will be taking on a third employee shortly to cope with all the extra work we are getting.’
‘Ankit has demonstrated the potential Cookright offers to new franchisees in a very short time,’ says Steve. ‘A franchisee needs to be a jack-of-all-trades to some extent, but our Cookright training, specialist equipment and processes make the work pretty straightforward. We are looking for people with skill and abilities to sell and network within the kitchen sector while providing the excellent service we have become renowned for. As they grow, franchisees increasingly employ staff and spend more time growing the business.’
Founded in 1997, Cookright Filtering Services is well-known in the hospitality industry throughout New Zealand. The company currently has four major areas available – Tauranga, Rotorua, Hawkes Bay and Christchurch East.
‘These areas all offer considerable potential in growth terms, as well as being in attractive parts of the country,’ says Steve. ‘We have a reputation to maintain, so if you think you can live up to that and do what Ankit is doing, contact me today.’
