The Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 set new standards for safe access when working at heights to improve workplace safety. The cost of compliance caused concern among many electricians, plasterers, painters and other tradies, but Christchurch electrician Ross Pickersgill saw an opportunity. He invested in a scissor lift which not only replaced ladders and scaffolding, but increased productivity by being easy to move. Even better, he quickly found a ready market for hiring it out when he wasn’t using it.

It was the birth of Accessman, which today has over 600 scissor lifts, knuckle-booms, cherry-pickers, telescopic boom-lifts, telehandlers and other access machines. Already the largest specialist equipment hire company in the South Island with six franchised and company-owned outlets, the company is now seeking franchisees in the North Island for the first time, as well as more in the South.

‘While still committed to continuing growth south of Cook Strait, there are definitely franchise opportunities in such areas as the Kapiti Coast, Tauranga and Auckland,’ says Lena Harrington, General Manager of the Accessman Group. ‘In fact, there’s a market ready and waiting for Accessman wherever there is active commercial and residential development.’

competitive benefits

Accessman offers a number of competitive benefits, says Lena. ‘The company is often viewed as the benchmark within the industry, being both innovative and pro-active. We tend to be the first to release new models, new products or upgraded features to the New Zealand market. Site visits are provided on request to evaluate requirements and recommend the most appropriate and cost-efficient machine. We appreciate that time is money for our customers, so reliability is paramount – checks are carried out before every machine leaves the yard and immediately on its return. In the unlikely event that a machine does break down, we will replace it within the hour.’

All Accessman staff must be fully qualified. ‘From the beginning, Accessman has taken operator training very seriously,’ says Lena. ‘So much so, in fact, that we have introduced the IPAF Pal card to the industry as an alternative choice to the HIANZ Silvercard – both of which the group provides training on. Accessman was an important advisor to the Hire Industry Association of New Zealand in redeveloping training to meet Codes of Practice for the operation of EWPs.

‘This approach has earned the company a client list which includes some of the country’s best-known names in construction, as well as thousands of smaller operators.’

for those with a business background

Lena says that potential Accessman franchisees are likely to have previously owned a successful business or have proven business acumen at a senior level. They must be able to manage a busy outlet and relate to customers at all levels in the construction and other industries.

‘Although it is not necessary for a franchisee to have industry experience they do need local knowledge, staff management skills and to be able to front up and talk the talk with tradies and other hirers. We provide full training, marketing materials, franchise manuals, operating systems and proprietary software, with ongoing support as the business grows.

‘Where a potential franchisee meets our criteria, in-depth market analysis is required  to accurately establish the level of investment needed depending on the type and numbers of machines to get the business up and running,’ explains Lena. ‘Franchisees will generally need to be in a position to invest around $900,000, although much of this can be financed.

‘It’s a substantial investment, but the returns can make it very worthwhile. If you have the management skills, the local knowledge and the desire to build a substantial business of your own, give me a call and let’s talk.’
